A short rant on our Digital Democracy.

    – The Democratization of technology led to the democratization of publishers.
    – Which led to the democratization of content.
    – Which led to the democratization of opinion
    .
    – Which led to the democratization of meaning.
    – Which led to the democratization of participation.
    – Which led to the democratization of brands

    .
    – Which all led to the erosion of the mass marketing model.
    – And the following erosion of the authoritarian Brand and Advertising model.

Today customers have become participants. And they anticipate that their contributions to the brand will be valued and relevant
.

The brands are at the same time becoming more aware that the advertising model is merely for creating awareness (“a thin layer of fog“, as an adman once called it)
. While all the valuable stuff is happening somewhere else. Somewhere brands also control but where marketing isn’t given enough influence

In this context maybe Seth Godin only referenced part of the solution when he said “build marketing into the product”. The product is the marketing, and of course, the utilities adding value to the products and brand experience are as well.
